Shawn was born in Emporia, Kansas and raised in the De Soto/Olathe area. He graduated from Olathe South High School and attended Mid America Nazarene University on a football scholarship. Prior to his freshman year, on a Sunday night in July at College Church of the Nazarene, he, along with his best friend Chip Millhuff, accepted Jesus Christ into his life. His goal was to earn his degree and go into law enforcement; the profession of his father.
Shawn met Sherri Pedersen, a pastor’s daughter who spent most of her childhood in Greeley, Colorado, and they were married in June of 1987. Within the first three months of their marriage, Shawn felt a call into ministry and began the steps for pursuing this call. His first assignment, as he began his education for ministry, was as youth pastor for his father-in-law, Roy Pedersen, at the Topeka Fairlawn Church of the Nazarene.
Shawn and Sherri spent almost five years at Topeka Fairlawn, had their first child, Shawna, before accepting his second assignment as senior pastor for the First Church of the Nazarene in Hooker, Oklahoma. After Hooker, Shawn pastored the First Churches in Blythe, California, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Visalia, California and finally Denver First Church of the Nazarene prior to arriving at Kansas First Church of the Nazarene. They had their second daughter, Shayli, while pastoring in Blythe, California in a San Diego hospital and their third child, and son, Shaden, in Council Bluffs, Iowa in an Omaha, Nebraska hospital. Shawna is 26 years old and married to Dalton Diehl, grandson to Jim Diehl and son to Don and Diann, and she is a children’s pastor for the Montrose Church of the Nazarene in Montrose, California. She graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University. Shayli is 21 and will be a senior at Northwest Nazarene University where she is on a volleyball scholarship and captain of her team studying Communication Sciences. Shaden is 18 and will be attending Mid America Nazarene University in the fall on a football scholarship. He is studying for the ministry.
Shawn has served as trustee on the Northwest Nazarene University board, the Nazarene Bible College board and the Central California and Colorado District advisory boards. He earned his master’s degree from Point Loma Nazarene University while serving in Visalia, California. Shawn has served on denominational boards and has spoken at retreats, revivals, and non-denominational national conferences. He has been a member of the COK (Churches over 1,000) since 2003.
Shawn’s interests include the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, KU Jayhawks and MNU Pioneers. His passion is watching his kids play sports and perform their activities. His passion for the church is for it to reach maximum impact in its community through various outreach and discipleship programs that lead to Christ transformation in their lives and in the Body.
